Position Description:

Yale University invites applications for four Data Science Preceptor positions. As part of Yale’s commitment to excellence in the teaching of Statistics and Data Science (S&DS), the newly launched Data Science Preceptor Program aims to enhance Data Science education across a diverse suite of courses, including introductory courses in S&DS offered by the S&DS Department and interdisciplinary “Data Science Connector” courses offered by departments throughout the university. These connector courses, which are continually being created and developed, apply S&DS methodologies to topics from the social sciences, sciences, engineering, and humanities. Courses in this program will include computing using R or Python, and a part of the role of preceptors is to facilitate and participate in the teaching of computing arising in these courses. Preceptors will be selected for their demonstrated expertise and potential in S&DS pedagogy. The program seeks two types of preceptors: those assisting with the introductory S&DS courses and those contributing to the development and delivery of connector courses. This initiative offers a unique opportunity for professionals at various stages of their careers, from seasoned PhD holders in data science and related fields to quantitatively skilled candidates with bachelor’s degrees, who are eager to contribute to an innovative teaching environment. Preceptors will collaborate with faculty, and with each other, to develop and refine course materials and pedagogical techniques. Qualifications

• A PhD is preferred. However, we recognize that excellence in teaching and application of S&DS can come with a variety of backgrounds. While candidates with a PhD in fields related to S&DS (such as sociology, political science, psychology, economics, biology and computer science) are highly valued, we also seek qualities including dedication, organizational skills, and particularly a passion for teaching and engaging with students. Accordingly, candidates with strong S&DS skills holding master’s or bachelor’s degrees who share our enthusiasm for S&DS education are also eligible to apply.

• Demonstrated interest, experience, or potential for excellence in teaching and pedagogy.
• Experience with Python and/or R programming and applications to data science. Application Instructions Interested candidates should submit the following materials online:
• A cover letter expressing interest in the position.
• A teaching statement detailing teaching philosophy, experience, the types of courses they are best suited to teach, and how the candidate plans to contribute to the Data Science Preceptor Program at Yale.
• A current curriculum vitae.
• A list of three references with contact information.
• Optional materials could include course evaluations or other evidence of teaching interest, experience, and effectiveness. Salary is dependent on education and/or experience (10-month appointment, renewable based on successful annual performance) Applications should be submitted through Interfolio at http://apply.interfolio.com/141565

Review of applications will begin April 1, 2024. Applications will be accepted through July 1, 2024, with an anticipated start date of August 1, 2024.

Position Description

Yale University’s Statistics and Data Science (S&DS) Department invites applications for three faculty positions to start at the Associate Professor with tenure level or Full Professor with tenure level to start in July 2024. Two of these positions prioritize real-world applications of S&DS, while the third is open to all areas in our field. For the applied positions, ideal candidates will engage with data-driven research in fields of inquiry beyond S&DS and pursue analytic developments that benefit applied research in those fields. Active collaborations with applied practitioners are welcome, and joint appointments with other departments of interest may be available.

In 2018, Yale announced that Data Science would be one of its top five priority areas for new investments in Science. In accordance with this plan, the S&DS Department at Yale has experienced remarkable growth, adding 15 faculty members in the last five years, 5 of whom have joint appointments with other departments. Current faculty in the department have Ph.D.s in fields including Applied Mathematics, Brain & Cognitive Science, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Political Science, and Statistics. After expanding into parts of multiple buildings, this summer brought a welcome consolidation with the department relocating to occupy three floors of the newly renovated and modernized “Kline Tower” at Yale.

The floor above the department houses Yale’s new Institute for Foundations of Data Science, which supports the development and application of data science across the University. New faculty in the S&DS Department will have an opportunity to play a key role in shaping this institute.

Excellence in teaching and advising in the area of Statistics and Data Science is valued, and new faculty will have opportunities to design courses that align with their research interests. The department is collegial and seeks others with strong interpersonal skills who have the capacity to increase Yale’s talent pool and effectively teach and mentor students of diverse backgrounds and interests.
